Developed from the timeless story-telling traditions of the North, Kathak traces its roots back to temples of India, where travelling bards recount spiritual and mythical stories through dance, music and poetry. Over time, the form evolved especially under the Mughal rule, to what we see today, with a unique and beautiful blend of Indian and Persian influence.
Kathak comprises of intricate footwork, graceful spins, and expressive gestures which are set to rhythmic cycles.
– Basic footwork (Tatkar)
– Introduction of different layas/speeds
– Understanding various rhythmic structures; example: Teental.
– Basic principles of chakkar/turns.
– Understanding various hasta mudras
– Practise small compositions (Todas/Tukdas) along with Thihais
– Pracitse the recitations of these compositions.

Rangmanch Pranam – Thaat – Aamads – Parans – Gat nikas – Kavittha – Gat bhavas
Classes will focus on breaking down the basics of various techniques and practising them with precision, interspersed with rhythmic understanding.
