The age-old classical dance form of India is timelessly bound by graceful story telling using lines, postures and gestures. The class will focus primarily on basic adavus, mudras and techniques, equipping students to then take on challenging choreographies and dance items interspersed with Nritta and Abhinaya.
– Basic postures (Samam, Aramandalam, Muzhumandalam)
– Breaking down different movements for different body parts in different speed
– Hand gestures
– Co-ordination building
– Mind to muscle connection
– Stamina and strength building
– Basics of Taala Shastra, rhythmic understanding
– Practice of Adavus, jathis
– Repertoire development
– Practice of Abhinaya (Rasa and Bhava)
The items in a Bharathanatyam repertoire that would be taught in due course are:
Alarippu – Jathiswaram – Shabdam – Padam – Javali – varnam – thillana
The classes will focus on ensuring that students understand the kinesthetics of the body required to create shapes and postures, refine and practise the basic adavus with more precision and introducing them to complex rhythmic structures.
